The Weekly Blurb – Bits and Bytes

1.    Online TRACpac Survey

TRAC Bibliographic Services Group has created a survey for anyone, especially library patrons, to find out about how the users prefer to search in TRACpac.  They are asking that all libraries promote this survey to all their library users, since the more feedback we get, the better we can make the catalogue!  If you could post a sign, something like: “Have you taken our online survey?”, just to raise awareness, that would be great.  There is no way to have the survey “pop up” when people use the catalogue (at least not with the software we have)….so we will have to rely on people seeing it, or having it pointed out to them, and just trying it out.

The survey is six questions long and deals with formats in the catalogue and how these items display.  The survey will collect for the next month or so. It is located at www.tracpac.ab.ca under TRAC News (last item on the left menu bar of the new portal page).  Take the survey yourself as well.  That way you provide your input, and can better promote how fast and easy it is to your patrons (it took me about 2 minutes!).

2.    Free Database Training Sessions

EBSCOhost Integrated Search invites you to participate in a series of four free online training sessions customized for librarians and focusing on specific features and functionality of EBSCOhost Integrated Search.

3.     Alberta Readers’ Choice Award

Voting opens on March 15th for the Alberta Readers’ Choice Awards.  The finalists for this year are:

·         Bomb Canada and Other Unkind Remarks in the American Media by Chantal Allan

·         Buying Cigarettes for the Dog by Stuart Ross

·         Fishing for Bacon by Michael Davie;

·         The Forgotten Explorer: Samuel Prescott Fay's 1914 Expedition to the Northern Rockies by Samuel Fay

·         The Frog Lake Reader by Myrna Kostash

This is a great way to promote the work of Canadian authors.  If you have any of these titles in your collections, why not display them as finalists in this competition?  Voting is open to the general public, and more information can be found at www.albertareaderschoice.ca/.
