Van Run: Toot Your Own Horn

Van Run: Toot Your Own Horn

This week, I went on van run with Joanne, so I haven’t been able to spend much time in the office. I did, however, get the chance to see most of the libraries in the Northern Lights Library System and met a lot of you briefly (very briefly!)

You know how you start out with preconceived ideas of how things should be until reality taps you on the shoulder and says, “Now wait a minute…”? I’ve been experiencing that this week. Before going on vacation, Mircea asked that while on van run I keep an eye out for accommodations made in the libraries for people with disabilities. Initially I thought that not much was being done. However, that opinion changed while speaking with one librarian. While, they had a magnifier and a S.A.D. lamp in place, no one ever used them.
This made me think back to the Plan of Service and the community needs assessment. If there is no one in the community who needs these provisions made, why should the library spend money on them? I also wondered if some items were not used due to  lack of public awareness.
Our libraries have some really great stuff in them! We need to find ways to toot our own horns, so that the public knows just what we have. I’ve been thinking about writing a few pieces on developing promotion materials. I know one or two have mentioned that help in this area would be appreciated, so I’m hoping that I can provide some information in the future that would fill this need. Let’s tell the world how great we are!
Next week: Overdrive
