The Weekly Blurb

The Weekly Blurb

As the new Public Services Consultant at Northern Lights Library Service, I’ve taken on the task of keeping up communications. Our quarterly newsletter, the Aurora, should be coming out at the end of the second week of October. I’d also like to send out a weekly blurb. This weekly communication will give you updates, provide information on services we provide, and offer tips on a variety of library topics. I will upload these to the NLLS blog as well, so they will be content searchable. If you have any topic that you would like to see covered in the blurb, let me know, and I’ll try to include it.
Plan of Service
How many of you use your library’s Plan of Service document on a daily basis? How many use the Plan of Service to make decisions regarding your collections, staffing, space allocation, programs, and marketing?
Libraries Branch, Municipal Affairs, is looking at ways to make the Plan of Service more than just a document that is submitted every three to five years, and then shoved into the back of a desk drawer, never to be seen again, let alone used as a vital tool in library management. They would like to see your Plan of Service acting as a reflection of your community’s needs, and a driving force behind your library’s day to day operations, without adding to your work load. In fact, if done properly, your operations could become more streamlined and efficient.
Earlier this week, Colette, Kelly Kirkpatrick (NLLS’s newest consultant), and I attended the “Strategic Planning for Results” workshop, led by strategic planning for libraries guru, Sandra Nelson. It was inspiring, and we’re really looking forward to sharing the process with you all, whether you are in the process of updating your Plan of Service or not. While the process and implementation may require changes in your library, these changes need not be burdensome to you.   In fact, within a few months, you may wonder why you hadn’t been doing things this way all along!
The workshop outlined how the process of developing the new Plan of Service would look for our larger libraries. This initiative is being rolled out province wide, with the expectation that all libraries follow the process and institute the new format. Smaller libraries (those with fewer than four staff members), however, will follow a somewhat abbreviated process. I will be on the steering committee to work out what that will look like, and we hope to have the process in place for smaller libraries by the end of the year (fingers crossed).
If you are beginning to update your plan of service, or are looking to begin your updates over the next few months, give us a call so that we can schedule a time to meet with you and discuss how we can help.
Have a great day!
