Kobo Clara HD

This new resource is exclusively available to Northern Lights Library patrons. Intended to support your ability to read comfortably and try out new technology before investing in it, these eReaders are lightweight and easy to use! With a Kobo eReader, you can customize fonts that suit your comfort level.

Here are a few features that can make the text easier for you to read: 

  • Font size adjustment – Make the text smaller or bigger with a few taps on the screen.
  • Font face adjustment – Adjust the font face to suit your preferences. For example, you can change the font face to a dyslexic font, or a sans-serif font.
  • Line spacing and margin size adjustment – Change the space between sentences and adjust the margin size.
  • Large Print Mode – Magnify screen menus and fonts to make the text easier to read.
  • ComfortLight – A built-in light lets you read in areas with little or no light.

Lending period: 3 months, no renewals

Required to make it work: Library membership, access to Overdrive to place holds and check out items—this can be on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Library Services for People with Print Disabilities

Print disabilities affect approximately 10% of the Canadian population. According to the Copyright Act (section 32), a print disability is a learning, physical or visual disability that impairs a person from reading conventional print.

Alberta public libraries that participate in the Public Library Network have access to resources that respond to the needs of people with print disabilities.

NNELS

The National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS) is a repository of content owned and sustained by Canadian public libraries, working with international partners, libraries, readers, and publishers (particularly Canadian ones) to make copies of books in accessible formats available to readers in Canada who have print disabilities.

CELA

The Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) makes it possible and easy for all public libraries in Canada to provide reading materials in accessible formats to patrons with print disabilities. CELA also provides training and support to help libraries deliver their accessible services effectively.
