It’s a long message this week, but one that a number of you have been asking for. 
 
Staffing & Salary Survey Report 2009
 
In February of 2009, the member libraries of the Northern Light s Library System were sent Staffing & Salary Surveys, and asked to return them mid-March. The survey covered: staff qualifications, staff salary ranges, library volunteers, general information and funding, benefits, continuing education for staff, and when personnel policies were put in place. This report summarizes the responses by category.
 
There were some issues with the compiling of the results. First, in order to make the results comparable, salaries given as an annual amount were translated into an hourly wage. For salary ranges that were given, the middle of the range was chosen to calculate overall averages, but upper and lower limits of ranges were used to report highest salary and lowest salary.   Second, some returned surveys gave incomplete or inaccurate information. In each section, I’ve provided the number of usable responses is given. Third, the libraries represented here come in all shapes and sizes. Higher salaries may be a result of the level of education, level of responsibility, and the size of the library and community served. It is not possible to show all of these combinations in a single report of manageable size. 
 
Thirty-five surveys were returned, representing thirty-seven libraries in the system.
 
Staff Qualifications
There were 34 usable responses in this area.
 
Professional Librarian: 
·         6 libraries employ Professional Librarians
·         one library employs 2 professional librarians for a total of 7 
·         5 of these are employed full time
Other University Degree:
·         10 libraries employ people with other university degrees
·         6 are full time, 12 are part time, 1 was temporary
·         total of 19 employees
 
Library Technician:
·         3 libraries employ Library Technicians
·         1 is full time, 1 is part time, and 1 was temporary
 
Library Operations Assistant:
·         6 libraries employ Library Operations Assistants
·         2 are full time, and 6 are part time
