Free eBooks and Audio Books on the Web

Posted on ago

You read that correctly. This entry is all about how to get eBooks and audio books for free, legally of course, on the web. After a brief explanation of current copyright law in Canada I will highlight here two very exciting web resources: Project Gutenberg and LibriVox. There are all sorts of ways to download books, movies, music and other media for free from the Internet and many of them are not legal - but there are many legal ways to do so as well. Two very powerful and joyous words y... More...

What is an Online Database?

Posted on ago

I think it fitting to begin this first entry with a blurb on NLLS’ online databases. You may be scratching your head at that term or yawning. Well, simply put - they are large repositories or gateways to journal, magazine and newspaper articles, images, maps, videos, the works. Wait a minute - that sounds just like what... More...

Podcasting is easy to do - at least the technical part - and thus has become all the rage among teenagers, computer nerds, librarians and just about anyone with an Internet connection. Just imagine…. You start a podcast on the politics of Guam which becomes all the rage in Yug... More...

Library Thing

Posted on ago

You may notice on the right side of the screen several thumbnail images of bookcovers. If you click on the image you’ll be taken to the Amazon.com record for that title. Clicking on the author or title of the book will take you to Northern Lights’ new Library Thing Catalog. Each time you visit the blog now images of books in NLLS’ professional development collection will randomly be generated. In an effort to market that collection to the people it is intended to serve -... More...
